SMOKESCREEN SERIES TO FEATURE 1970s BLOCKBUSTER

Film enthusiasts are sure to be thrilled with the next instalment of the Smokescreen series at the Western Plains Cultural Centre (WPCC).

The next screening will be held on Saturday 1 June 2024 with the film The Towering Inferno, a genre defining camp big budget disaster film that perfectly encapsulates the 1970s blockbuster.

The Towering Inferno is an iconic film for its time and was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning three award categories.

“The 1970s was an era when Hollywood embraced the disaster flick. There were films about boats turning over, earthquakes, nuclear melt downs and many more,” Dubbo Regional Council’s Local Studies Officer Simone Taylor, who has developed this year’s program, said.

The Towering Inferno is a masterpiece of stunt coordination, special effects and cinematography in the era before CGI.”

“While some elements of the film today seem dated, it remains one of the best disaster films of all time, and really provided the template for the blockbusters of the 80’s and 90’s.”

Smokescreen is a monthly film series focusing on iconic films from across the decades. This year's theme 'Scene Stealing Style' focuses on films with unique stylistic elements.

Smokescreen is great opportunity for the Dubbo community to enjoy, celebrate and contemplate cult cinema while meeting new people.

“Smokescreen is a great event to revisit classic old movies and discover new films; it’s a must for the movie buffs and a great excuse to get some friends together and enjoy as a social get together,” Ms Taylor said.

In line with Council’s SPARC Cultural Plan, Smokescreen provides an opportunity to foster community engagement with film that is open and inclusive.

Smokescreen is held in the Black Box theatre at the WPCC on the first Saturday of each month at 4pm. The cost is $10 per session. To view the complete list of films and purchase tickets visit westernplainsculturalcentre.org/events.
