THEATRE WINS IMPACT AWARD FOR SATURDAY NIGHT SOCIAL

Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre (DRTCC) and Dance Makers Collective have together won a 2024 PAC Australia Impact Award for The Saturday Night Social.

The award recognises the shared ingenuity, reciprocity, care and commitment of DRTCC and Dance Makers Collective in the development and ongoing presentation of The Saturday Night Social.

The project demonstrates new and exciting ways of thinking about touring and extending the legacy of a touring work. The development The Saturday Night Social establishes a model of touring that not only deeply engages with the community it visits, but has the potential to exist in communities without the original company artists, touring a concept, rather than a work and demonstrates what can be achieved with a strong Presenter/Producer partnership.

The Saturday Night Social was the first show in this year’s season program and it was such a hit with the community,” Dubbo Regional Council Regional Events Manager Linda Christof said.

“It was an intergenerational night with ages ranging from 18 months to 91-years-old on the dance floor. The success of the show was highlighted by the fact when the Big Band finished its set, people still wanted to keep on dancing, so the tech team moved into DJ mode.”

“We collaborated with Dance Makers Collective, local dance students, Rock n’ Rollers, The Tin Roof Big Band and the Classic Car Club. Our team is humbled to have won this award for an initiative that has a low carbon footprint but high community impact. It’s now going to feature as a regular in our annual program,” Ms Christof said.

The Impact Awards were announced on Wednesday 21 August 2024 at the Geelong Arts Centre as part of the Australian Performing Arts Exchange (APAX).

The annual national awards celebrate performing arts, leadership and excellence, with a focus on lasting community impact.

Seven Impact Awards were presented along with the 2024 Performing Arts Centre of the Year Award and the Wendy Blacklock Industry Legend Award.

PAC Australia’s Executive Director, Katherine Connor congratulated all the winners following the formal function.

“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the winners who have truly exemplified impact and excellence in their artistic work. This being the third year of our newly reimagined awards format, the presentation was another remarkable celebration of the groundbreaking work that unites and motivates us all,” Ms Connor said.

Staff at the DRTCC are currently working hard on the next season program, with the launch scheduled for 24 November 2024. For more details visit www.drtcc.com.au .
