ARCHIBALD PRIZE EXHIBITION RETURNS TO DUBBO
Australia’s premier portraiture competition returns to Dubbo’s Western Plains Cultural Centre (WPCC) this month with the 2022 Archibald Prize exhibition.
Viewers will be able to see 51 of the finalists from last year’s prize, including Claus Stangl’s Packing Room Prize winning portrait of New Zealand director Taika Waititi, the People’s Choice winner by Jeremy Eden of charity campaigner and actor Samuel Johnson OAM, and the overall Archibald Prize winner Moby Dickens by Blak Douglas, which depicts Wiradjuri artist Karla Dickens in the context of the disastrous floods that hit Lismore in 2022.
The exhibition will be officially opened by Anne Ryan, Curator of Australian Art, from the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW) on Friday 2 June at 6pm. The exhibition will be on display until Sunday 30 July. This exclusive opening event has limited tickets so be quick to secure yours. Tickets for the Official Opening are $13.50.
Visitors will also be able to vote for their favourite artwork in the WPCC People’s Choice Award.
“This is a great opportunity for local art lovers to enjoy a national exhibition without having to travel all the way to Sydney,” said Mayor of Dubbo Regional Council Mathew Dickerson.
“The 2022 exhibition only has six stops on its travels, and to have the Western Plains Cultural Centre as the final stop on that tour is a great honour for our community.”
“Not only that, but it gives those in smaller communities further out west a chance to enjoy a big city artistic experience when they take their next regular trip to Dubbo.”
Entry for the Archibald Prize 2022 Exhibition is $12.50 per adult, $6 per concession, $10 for ANZ customers and members of the Art Gallery of New South Wales are free.
A free In Conversation event will be held on Saturday 3 June at 11am, featuring Anne Ryan, Curator of Australian Art at AGNSW and curator of the Archibalds, and WPCC Curator Kent Buchanan as they discuss the changing face of the Archibald Prize.
