CALL OUT FOR LOCAL SHOP AND SHOPKEEPER PHOTOS
The Western Plains Cultural Centre (WPCC) is putting a call out to the community for images and/or items related to the history of stores in Dubbo and Wellington.
The WPCC is curating an exhibition in the museum called Store Keep that will focus on the role of shops and shopkeepers in the development of the communities of Dubbo and Wellington. The exhibition will be on display in November 2023.
The team at WPCC are seeking any photographs of stores, particularly images of shop interiors, which may be included in the upcoming exhibition. Images can be from any time period from 1800s through to the 2000s.
“We are really looking for a variety of images to represent the shops that have played a role in the creation of our communities,” Local Studies Officer Simone Taylor said.
“We want to showcase and tell the stories of shopkeeping in Dubbo and Wellington but we need the communities help with more photos of stores throughout our region’s history.”
“Stores are a part of the economic history of the region and as towns grew so did the number and variety of stores, so we want this exhibition to reflect this growth and change.”
The WPCC staff will digitally scan your images, unless you are happy to donate them to the Local Studies Collection.
Items and objects such as receipts, advertisements and promotional materials are also being sought.
“If members of the community have any items from local shops from the past we would also welcome them for consideration in the Store Keep exhibition,” Ms Taylor said.
Store Keep is a project that directly supports the SPARC Cultural Plan. It actions community feedback calling for the celebration of local stories and exploration of regional history
