DRONES COLLECTING DATA FOR SMART AND COOL PLACES PROGRAM

Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) advises residents that the University of NSW will be flying drones over parts of Southlakes and South Dubbo between 10 to 12 November as part of the Smart and Cool Places program.

DRC is working with the University of NSW and Maitland City Council as part of the program which measures temperatures over a 12 month period and simulates tests on how different urban development approaches can impact heat.

The project is in the early stages with data being collected in Dubbo and Maitland to support the trial. The drones will measure temperatures through infrared imaging and will not capture traditional videography like other drones to ensure the privacy of the community is maintained.

Temperature sensors will also be installed on street signs at a later date to measure temperatures over a longer period of time.

It is hoped the program will establish consistent methods for reporting and measuring leading to collaboration between stakeholders and support evidence-based planning decisions for specific locations.
