DUBBO RESIDENTS RECOGNISED AT AUSTRALIA DAY EVENT
Hundreds attended the Dubbo Australia Day event on 26 January with the hard work of community members recognised during the ceremony.
Mayor of Dubbo Regional Council Mathew Dickerson welcomed residents and was followed by Dubbo’s Australia Day ambassador David Hall OAM and then Lewis Burns who gave an Indigenous Elder address.
Mr Hall is a Paralympic Gold Medallist, Former World Number 1 Tennis Player and ITF World Wheelchair Tennis Champion.
Six outstanding citizens were recognised as Dubbo’s Australia Day award recipients.
Peter Hargreaves was announced as the 2023 Citizen of the Year for his sense of humanity and compassion which is continually giving to others. He spends his days as a volunteer driver for the NSW Cancer Council and is a familiar face in the waiting room at the Western Cancer Centre in Dubbo.
Brian Goodlet was announced as Dubbo’s Senior Citizen of the Year and Tony Wheatland is the Cultural Person of the Year.
Emily Williams is the Sportsperson of the Year, Jack Deveson is the 2023 Young Sportsperson of the Year and Cameron Porteous was recognised for his Services to Sport.
“The Dubbo Region is a multicultural community and we want to be inclusive in our Australia Day event and showcase modern day Australia,” Clr Dickerson said.
“However you choose to recognise 26 January I hope you take a moment to acknowledge the hard working residents who have received recognition from the community today.
Clr Dickerson said he was looking forward to hearing feedback from the community in regard to how they want to recognise Australia Day in the future following the 2023 events.
