GET CRAFTY THIS AUGUST FOR CHILDREN’S BOOK WEEK

The team at the Macquarie Regional Library (MRL) are gearing up to celebrate Children’s Book Week.

“To celebrate this year’s Book Week we are starting the celebrations early and offering free take and make craft kits for kids who borrow an item from the library from now up until the 27 August,” program organiser Sarah Tilbrook said.

From the 7 to 27 August any child that borrows an item from the Macquarie Regional Library will receive a free take and make craft kit that has been inspired by the 2023 Book Week shortlisted titles.

Children can then join the MRL team on Mondays from 14 August for the special online ‘Maker Mondays’ where kids can follow along and complete their craft kits.

“Children’s Book Week, held from 19 to 25 August, is a fun week for public libraries and schools to celebrate books and Australian children’s authors and illustrators,” Miss Tilbrook said.

This year’s theme for Children’s Book Week is Read, Grow and Inspire and will also see all children’s sessions such as Storytime, Rhyme Time and Wriggle and Rhyme featuring the Book Week shortlisted titles as part of these sessions.

“Book Week is always a hive of activity at our local libraries with schools visits and the staff will dress up as their favourite characters.”

Schools and preschools are invited to book a session at their local library for Book Week, alternatively one of the MRL Librarians can do an incursion and come to the school to run a session for Book Week. Simply contact your local branch to book a session.

“Your local library is a great place to start a love of reading for your child. Libraries are local, accessible and free. We offer a welcoming environment for all families and have a large range of resources for children from books through to educational boxes.”

“We invite the local families in our community to come in and see what their local library has to offer this Book Week and enjoy the different activities available,” Miss Tilbrook said.

The ‘Maker Monday’ sessions will run on Monday 14, 21 and 28 August with the take and make craft kits including an Australia map sand art, DIY jigsaw puzzle and sticker by numbers giraffe.

Craft kits are available while stocks last. Maker Monday videos are accessible via the Macquarie Regional Library’s Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube channel.
