LAST CHANCE TO SEE ARCHIBALD PRIZE IN DUBBO
Time is running out to see the 2022 Archibald Prize exhibition at the Western Plains Cultural Centre (WPCC). The exhibition will close on Sunday 30 July, so be sure to plan a visit to see Australia’s premier portraiture competition before it departs Dubbo.
There are 51 of the finalists from last year’s Archibald Prize on display including the overall Archibald Prize winner Moby Dickens by Blak Douglas, which depicts Wiradjuri artist Karla Dickens in the context of the disastrous floods that hit Lismore in 2022 as well as the Art Gallery of NSW People’s Choice winner by Jeremy Eden of charity campaigner and actor Samuel Johnson OAM.
“Having the Archibald Prize here in Dubbo is a unique opportunity for the community to enjoy a national exhibition without having to travel to Sydney,” Western Plains Cultural Centre Curator, Kent Buchanan said.
“There has been a steady stream of visitors through the doors of the Western Plains Cultural Centre each day to see the Archibald Prize exhibition.”
“The Archibald Prize is an exhibition that everyone can enjoy and always evokes different points of view on the people portrayed in the artworks as well as the way in which artists depict their subjects.”
During the exhibition period visitors were able to vote for their favourite artwork in the WPCC People’s Choice Award. The Art Gallery of NSW have drawn the winner with the favourite artwork as voted for by the local community being James Powditch’s work, Laura Tingle – the fourth estate, with the $500 prize donated by ANZ going to Fran Anderson, who was visiting family in Dubbo.
“We had over 1500 entries into the People’s Choice Award and they represented a broad spectrum of the artworks in the exhibition but James Powditch’s portrait of Laura Tingle was the overwhelming favourite,” Mr Buchanan said.
The Archibald Prize is a ticketed exhibition. Entry to the Archibald Prize is $12.50 per adult, $6 per concession and $10 for ANZ customers.
The Archibald Prize 2022 is an Art Gallery of New South Wales touring exhibition. Presenting partner ANZ.
