LOCAL ATHLETES RECOGNISED AT AWARDS
Over 70 athletes from across the Dubbo Region have been recognised for their achievements of State or National selection in their chosen sport at the Dubbo Regional Sports Awards held on Friday 10 November at the Dubbo RSL.
Sport plays a major role in strengthening the social fabric of regional communities; it allows for social interaction and inclusion as well as promoting physical activity and health outcomes. The athletes recognised at the Dubbo Regional Sports Awards have excelled in sport and are to be commended for their achievements.
Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton is pleased to host these awards for the 16th consecutive year in conjunction with Dubbo Regional Council.
“Congratulations to all the award recipients recognised at the Dubbo Regional Sports Awards; their achievements have been the result of hard work and dedication in their chosen sports and recognition at this year’s awards is a wonderful way to acknowledge their efforts,” Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton said.
Some notable mentioned of the Dubbo Region Sports Award recipients are:
- Sophie McAneney for her individual achievement winning bronze medals in the 50m and 100m breaststroke events at the Australian All Schools Swimming Championships.
- Clancy Henderson for her individual achievement for Ranch Sorting. Clancy is 12 years of age and represented Australia at the Ranch Sporting National Championships World Finals in Fort Worth Texas, USA. Clancy finished the year in Australia as the National Champion in her age division and the Reserve Champion, receiving high scores overall in the Ranch Sorting World Finals.
- Emily Lousick for individual achievement in athletics. Emily was third in high jump in the 2022 School Sport Australia Track & Field Championships for 11 year old girls as well as a number of places at state titles.
- Dennis Valantine was also acknowledged for his individual contribution to the sport of water polo. Dennis has been involved in aquatics as a swimmer, water polo player, referee and coach for over 60 years. Dennis has volunteered for Dubbo Water Polo Club since the inception of Dubbo Water Polo Club and has been a committee member each year and coached and refereed the junior and open members every season. He has also coached swimmers to state and nationals.
“Our community have access to a wide variety of sporting opportunities in the Dubbo region which is definitely represented in this year’s awards,” Dubbo Regional Council Chief Executive Officer Murray Wood said.
“Sport in our community is so strong because of the volunteers, coaches and administrators who provide countless hours to ensuring sport is available for our community and that athletes have the opportunities and pathways to exceed,” Mr Wood said.
The Dubbo Regional Sports Awards are an annual event that has been running for 21 years. It recognises the outstanding achievements of Dubbo and Wellington's most talented sports people of 2023 and also celebrates the important people behind the scenes.
