MACQUARIE LIONS PARK WEST AMENITIES CLOSED FOR PAINTING
The Macquarie Lions Park West Amenities block will be closed to the public for painting works from Monday 18 December to Wednesday 20 December.
Contour 3D personnel will be on site during the three days to undercoat, topcoat and brush the walls in a light grey finish to look the same as the current exterior.
They will wrap the outside of the amenities block in plastic to keep fumes contained and dust away during the painting process.
“During construction a decision was made to try and move away from painting by adding oxide into the cement, which would in the long term reduce our maintenance costs,” Dubbo Regional Council Manager Major Projects Ian Whipple said.
“However, since the opening we have watched the building expand and contract and now the building has settled into the local climate a decision has been made to paint the structure.
A protective graffiti coating was also added to the walls during construction with preparation work to prime the coating before the paint is applied.
“Painted buildings can require maintenance long term as they need to be re-painted from time to time to maintain the appearance, which is why we wanted to trial this new technique.
“Recent attention around the aesthetics of the building shows us that painting is appropriate to provide the public with a more aesthetically pleasing building,” Mr Whipple said.
The amenities block will be unavailable for the public during the painting process.
Members of the public are advised the closest public amenities are located at the Church Street Rotunda or Sir Roden Cutler Park.
The amenities block opened in September 2023 and was a unique and ground-breaking project for DRC being the first building or facility constructed by a Council in Australia using 3D printing technology.
While DRC has no immediate plans to use the 3D printing technology on any other amenities in the near future it has enabled us to use the learnings from the project to see potential opportunity for use in the future.
The internal and external walls were 3D printed by contractor Contour 3D, while the internal fit-out and landscaping were completed by local tradespeople.
