NEW WELLINGTON ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING STATIONS

Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) has installed four new public electric vehicle charging stations in Wellington, with two at Wellington Library and two at the Wellington Caves.

The charging stations add to the growing EV charging network across the Dubbo region, which includes the fast charging stations already installed at the Western Plains Cultural Centre in Dubbo, helping to reduce electric vehicle range anxiety in the region.

The PlugShare website will help guide visitors to the new sites, where they can use their own type 2 cable and the free Smart Charge app to charge their vehicles at no cost. It then allows the visitors to spend more time in the township while their vehicles are charging.

“The Wellington Library and Wellington Caves are perfect spots to host these stations, given their location on the Mitchell Highway and the many public amenities nearby,” Mayor of Dubbo Regional Council Mathew Dickerson said.

“Visitors who stop at Wellington Library will be able to enjoy the beauty of Cameron Park with its fantastic playground, gorgeous gardens and public amenities or spend time in local cafés, pubs and shops which are just a few steps away from where their vehicle is charging. Those who stop at Wellington Caves will be able to travel back in time through the ancient caves and prehistoric fossils, enjoy a coffee at the cafe, or stay a little longer at the overnight accommodation,” Clr Dickerson said.

DRC’s Organisational Sustainability Coordinator Catriona Jennings said the initiative isn’t just great for enticing visitors to the region, but it is also going to make electric vehicle ownership more appealing for locals as well.

“These charging stations are another step towards a zero emissions future and alongside DRC’s Zero Emissions Fleet Strategy. It means a cleaner, more sustainable future for us and generations to come,” Ms Jennings said.

As part of DRC’s 2040 Community Strategic Plan, Council resolved to achieve net zero emissions through several portals including alternative modes of transport.

In December 2022 Council adopted the Zero Emissions Fleet Strategy and Implementation Plan which supports and guides Council in reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with its fleet operations. Under this strategy Council is purchasing EVs as a portion of their fleet vehicles.

The new public electric vehicle charging stations have been co-funded by the NSW Government under Round 1 of the NSW Electric Vehicle Destination Charging Grants.

More information about locations of electric vehicle charging stations in the Dubbo region and how to use them can be found on Council’s website.
