OLD DUBBO GAOL WINS SILVER AT NSW TOURISM AWARDS

It’s silver! Old Dubbo Gaol has taken home silver for the Cultural Tourism category at the 2023 NSW Tourism Awards held on Wednesday 8 November in Sydney.

The Old Dubbo Gaol also won bronze in the Tourism Attraction category and Dubbo Regional Council won silver in the NSW Government Tourism category.

“Congratulations to the whole team at Old Dubbo Gaol for winning silver at the NSW Tourism Awards. This is a wonderful achievement and a testament to the continued improvements being made to the visitor experience and preservation of this culturally significant site,” said Dubbo Regional Council Mayor Mathew Dickerson.

“This was also the first time that Dubbo Regional Council has been a finalist in the NSW Government Tourism category, so to place second in this category in the state is a great achievement as well.”

The Old Dubbo Gaol has introduced a number of new developments over the past 12 months. These include the first temporary exhibition of ‘The Life of Crime,’ the first publication by Old Dubbo Gaol Visitor Experience Officer, Chris Anemaat, designed to complement the current exhibition. Additionally, an interactive map design and touch screen have been installed in the Gallows Gallery. These have all contributed to the achievements of the tourist attraction over the past 12 months.

The Old Dubbo Gaol has been undergoing continued site restoration work across the site including utility infrastructure upgrades, heritage roofing work and ongoing restoration of brickwork.

“The Old Dubbo Gaol team are incredibly dedicated to continuing to improve and restore the site whilst providing an exceptional visitor experience.”

“Congratulations also to Taronga Western Plains Zoo who has taken out silver in the Major Tourist Attraction category. It just shows the depth of quality tourism experiences in Dubbo and why our region is such a popular destination for visitors,” Clr Dickerson said.
