WHAT’S ON FOR CHILDREN THIS SUMMER
Take a walk on the wild side at the Macquarie Regional Library and get creative at the Western Plains Cultural Centre (WPCC) this summer with a great range of activities, events and workshops planned for the January school holidays.
At the Dubbo Library Reptiles on the Go will showcase all things scales, tails and fangs with a unique experience that will bring kids face to face with reptiles such as a lizard, python and crocodile. There are two sessions at the Dubbo Library on Monday 22 January 2024 from 2pm – 3pm and 3pm – 4pm.
The Wellington Library will feature Mini Beast Madness on Tuesday 16 January from 10.30am – 11.30am ideal for 5 – 12-year-olds. Join in the fun at this interactive, hands-on mini beast show featuring a colourful range of large, live Australian invertebrate animals such as insects, arachnids and more.
“We have several wild themed school holiday activities at both the Dubbo and Wellington branches throughout January. These sessions include wildlife shows, craft, storytelling, stop motion video and augmented reality,” Macquarie Regional Library Manager Kathryn McAlister said.
“The Reptiles on the Go and Mini Beast Madness shows offer a unique experience to learn about reptiles and mini beasts in an interactive session right here in your local library.”
Bookings are essential for the Macquarie Regional Library sessions; to book visit mrl.nsw.gov.au/kids.
The art workshops at the WPCC are suitable for children of all skill levels from beginners to the more experienced young artists. The art workshops include painting, ceramics, sculpture and mixed media.
“We have a great range of art workshops including air dry clay, ceramics, fabric printing, painting and collage throughout January as well as the free Waste 2 Art Workshop on 23 January to get your entries started early,” Dubbo Regional Council Education Officer Rebecca Walker said.
“Each art workshop is led by an art tutor who guides the children through the creative process and helps bring their ideas to life.”
Sessions are 10am – 12pm for 5 – 9-year-olds and 1pm – 3pm for 10 – 16-year-olds. Workshops are available on various weekdays from 9 January to 23 January 2024. The workshops have limited numbers per session and range in cost from $10 to $25 per student.
The Waste 2 Art workshop will focus on this year’s theme of packaging and encourages children to learn about sustainability by transforming waste materials to art. For more information on session dates and to book visit westernplainsculturalcentre.org.
