WHAT'S ON THIS WINTER SCHOOL HOLIDAYS
Beat the winter blues these school holidays and head indoors to enjoy the variety of activities and events that Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) has on offer in July. These activities are sure to entertain, engage and channel kids’ creativity this winter.
The Macquarie Regional Library is launching its winter reading program just in time for the school holidays. Open to all ages this reading rewards program involves participants logging their reading and receiving badges for every 20 minutes of reading completed. There are eight prize packs up for grabs with the Winter Reading program running from 1 July – 31 August 2023.
“The winter reading program is perfect for the colder winter months. There are such a great range of books and resources for children of all ages at our local libraries and it’s an inexpensive way to keep the kids entertained by reading more at home,” Dubbo Regional Council Mayor Mathew Dickerson said.
The Macquarie Regional Library is also running a number of craft activities at both Dubbo and Wellington branches. Some of these activities include knot blanket or knot pillow craft sessions, a book nook craft session, clay echidna craft and dot painting. The Dubbo Library is also hosting a Teddy Bear’s Picnic story time on Friday 14 July from 11am – 12pm.
The Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre (DRTCC) has two great shows on during the school holidays that are sure to be a hit with the kids. Bring the whole family to The Cat in the Hat for an experience they’ll never forget. A story that has been around for over 50 years is played out live on stage. The Cat in the Hat is on Thursday 6 July with two shows at 10.30am and 1pm. Tickets are $40 per adult and youth and $30 each for a group of six or more.
The ARIA Award Winning Children’s Musical Group, Teeny Tiny Stevies is also coming to Dubbo these school holidays and will be performing a mix of fan favourites as well as brand new material from their new album. Enjoy this live music show on Friday 7 July at 10.30am, cost is $35 per person. All tickets available at www.drtcc.com.au or at the box office.
Additionally, take a backstage tour and go behind the scenes at the DRTCC and see what happens behind the red velvet curtain. Tours will run on Tuesday 4 July, Tuesday 11 July and Thursday 13 July at 10am. Tickets $10 for youth or concession and $15 per adult. Bookings essential.
The Western Plains Cultural Centre is channelling kids’ creativity with a number of art workshops for children aged 5 – 14. Explore nature by creating textured charcoal drawings on 4 July and 7 July or create a mixed media collage based on nature, birds and water on 6 July and 12 July. A clay leaf mobile and wall art workshop will run on 3 July. Sessions are at 10am – 12pm for ages 5 – 8 with parent supervision required and 2pm – 4pm for 9 – 14-year-olds. Cost $10 per student and each session is 2 hours duration. Registration is essential as tickets are limited for the holiday workshops, so book early to avoid disappointment.
“It is great to see such a variety of activities on offer in the school holidays in the Dubbo Region from shows at the Dubbo Regional Theatre to a variety of creative workshops at our libraries in Dubbo and Wellington as well as at the Western Plains Cultural Centre,” Clr Dickerson said.
