POWERFUL COMING OF AGE TALE FOURTEEN COMES TO DUBBO REGION
Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre (DRTCC) will play host to Shake & Stir Theatre Company’s moving adaptation of Fourteen this May, with the inspirational true story currently touring around Australia.
Fourteen is an equal-parts uplifting and heart-wrenching account of best-selling author and award-winning journalist Shannon Molloy’s experience growing up gay in regional Queensland at an all-boys rugby-mad Catholic school; the bullying, torment and betrayal as well as the moments of resilience, love and hilarity that punctuated his 14th year.
Manager Regional Events Linda Christof said the production features both humour and hard-hitting, heart-on-sleeve honesty.
“Fourteen is a moving true story of adversity and trauma but also a story of resilience, hope and hilarity – thanks to the love of a group of close-knit friends, a fiercely protective family, an extraordinary mother and, of course, some nostalgic 90s bangers from the likes of S Club 7, Shania Twain and The Spice Girls.”
“Shake & Stir Theatre Company has been behind some great productions like Jane Eyre, Animal Farm, and Dracula and Fourteen is set to be no different,” Ms Christof.
Shannon Molloy said seeing his story come to life on stage represented a dream coming true.
“The response to the show was phenomenal and very moving. Thousands of people resonated with my story and fell in love with the world Shake and Stir created. I can’t wait for new audiences to come see it,” Mr Molloy said.
So, press play on your discman, lose yourself in a pumping 90s pop remix and take a hyper coloured trip back to your teens. This is Fourteen.
Fourteen will be performed on Saturday 25 May 2024 at 7.30pm at the DRTCC.
