WESTERN PLAINS CULTURAL CENTRE OFFERS UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO EDUCATORS
Western Plains Cultural Centre (WPCC) will add a new component to its already packed-to-the-brim school excursion/school holiday educational workshops lineup in 2024.
Titled Straight from the Source: The 1955 Flood, this new workshop is aimed at the Stage 4 Geography/History curriculum and uses museum collection materials to bring history to life.
Based on the 1955 flooding event in Dubbo with artefacts from the WPCC’s collection, students immerse themselves in the process of historical inquiry utilising primary sources to uncover ‘What happened during the 1955 Flood?’.
Straight from the Source: The 1955 Flood entails a one-hour workshop including a museum tour.
WPCC will continue to offer its highly popular art workshops and the 1950s classroom experience.
WPCC’s Cultural Development Coordinator Jessica Moore said the team are excited to be bringing this new workshop to students and educators across the region.
“We’re excited to be launching the Straight from the Source: The 1955 Flood workshop in 2024. We’ve spent considerable time designing this new workshop so that it complements and builds on our already established student activities,” Ms Moore said.
Ms Moore said the WPCC is actively looking for new Casual Tutors to join the team to deliver the diverse range of workshops the WPCC facilitates.
“We currently have several Casual Tutor roles available for residents who have experience in the community services, education or engagement sectors and are passionate about educating the region’s young people in art and history,” Ms Moore said.
Casual Tutor Pauline Griffiths has been working at the WPCC for several years and says the experience of educating young people about the region is incredible.
“I have always been an educator and will always be an educator. I love interacting with the children and sharing my knowledge with them – but I also learn a lot from them too, and that’s the great thing about a role such as this. I’d encourage anyone with an education, engagement, or community services background to apply,” Ms Griffiths said.
