DUBBO REGIONAL COUNCIL CELEBRATES A SUCCESSFUL NSW SENIORS FESTIVAL

The important role seniors play in the Dubbo region as well as the valuable contributions they make has been celebrated with events across Dubbo and Wellington as Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) marks the 2021 NSW Seniors Festival. Appropriately themed, “In our nature”, the festival celebrates the resilience and spirt seniors bring to our community.

Acting Mayor of the Dubbo Region, Councillor Stephen Lawrence said seniors are the leaders of our community. “Our older generations give so much to the Dubbo region. In almost any community group you will find our seniors representing and volunteering to make our community a better place to live, work and play. The inclusive list of events hosted by DRC were a great opportunity for our seniors to socialise, meet new friends and celebrate their contribution,” said Councillor Lawrence.

Events that were hosted to promote and celebrate the festival across the region included backstage guided tours of the Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre (DRTCC), led by a member of the professional team at the DRTCC. Seniors were able to see the theatre from a different angle and gain backstage access, hidden passageways and mechanical apparatuses more commonly known only to the technical team and performers.

The free Seniors Expo in Dubbo was held on Wednesday and saw over 100 seniors gather to enjoy morning tea and hear from local speakers and entertainers. On Friday a free movie was screened at the Wellington Civic Centre, where seniors received a free morning tea and enjoyed the Australian film, Ride like a girl.

DRC’s Director of Liveability Skye Price said it is wonderful to see seniors embracing the organised events. “ Our seniors can often be unintentionally left out of organised events due to accessibility and relevance. However Council staff have gone to great lengths to make sure the organised activities were appropriate for our older citizens from all aspects and I commend them on a successful festival,” said Ms Price.

DRC also provided over 200 information packs for the seniors that included information from a variety of local services and organisations to help them live safely, independently, creatively, active and well.
