GET READY FOR THIS YEAR’S HOUSEHOLD CHEMICAL CLEAN OUT
Residents in the Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) local government area are being urged to prepare for this year’s Household Chemical CleanOut. Held annually, the cleanout allows residents to safely dispose of potentially hazardous household chemicals found in the home.
“We take a number of hazardous items at our Whylandra Waste and Recycling Centre and Wellington Waste Transfer Station, including car batteries and gas bottles; however, the Household Chemical Cleanout can take a wider range of items,” said Manager Resource Recovery and Efficiency, John Wisniewski.
This year’s clean out is occurring in Dubbo on Saturday 1 May from 8am – 4pm, and items can be dropped off at the Dubbo Regional Council Works Depot, at 24 Hawthorn Street Dubbo.
Wellington residents will then be able to drop off their household chemicals on Monday 3 May from 8am – 11am at the Wellington Waste Facility, located at 83 Nanima Village Road.
“Only household quantities will be accepted, so this means only items that are 20 litres, or 20kg. There is an exception for paint though, with up to 100 litres in 20 litre containers accepted. We also ask that when bringing them to the drop-off point, you transport your items safely,” said Mr Wisniewski.
Fire and Rescue NSW says the safest way to transport chemicals is in the boot of the car, or secured on the tray of a ute, to avoid any chance of the chemicals spilling onto carpets.
“I would certainly advise, don’t have it in the passenger cab of your vehicle. Keep it in the boot, have them in a secondary container if you’re not sure how secure they are, or what they are. Make sure they don’t leak within the boot, and that’s probably the best thing you can do for them,” said Station Officer Simon Bracht from Fire & Rescue NSW.
Items that are accepted as part of the Household Chemical CleanOut include:
- Garden chemicals
- Pool chemicals
- Household cleaners
- Hobby chemicals
- Poisons
- Batteries
- Paint
- Motor oils, fluids and fuels
- Fluoro lights
- Gas bottles
- Fire extinguishers
- Smoke detectors
