RESPECT. REFLECT AND CELEBRATE THIS AUSTRALIA DAY IN WELLINGTON
The program for Australia Day in Wellington has been released and is dedicated to recognising some of our incredible residents, welcoming our newest citizens and reflecting on what it means to be Australian.
Kicking off at Cameron Park, Nanima Crescent Wellington from 7:30am with a free breakfast courtesy of Rotary Club of Wellington, the official ceremony begins at 8:30am. The National Anthem will be performed by Sophie Anderson accompanied by the Wellington Town Band.
Deputy Mayor of Dubbo Regional Council Richard Ivey and Australia Day Wellington Ambassador Corey Tutt will each make their address, followed by Australia Day Award presentations recognising: Community Service / Achievement Awards, Cultural Event of the Year, Young Sportsperson of the Year, Sportsperson of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, and Citizen of the Year.
“Australia Day is about reflecting on where we’ve come from and always looking towards a better future,” said Deputy Mayor Ivey. “We have some truly exceptional people in Wellington and it’s important that we take the time to recognise those who have dedicated so much to making our community as special as it is, and I look forward to sharing some of the stories of those remarkable people.”
This year’s Australia Day Wellington Ambassador is Corey Tutt, a proud Kamilaroi man and 2020 NSW Young Australian of the Year. Corey is the CEO and founder of the charity DeadlyScience, which provides science resources, mentoring and training to more than 110 remote and regional schools across Australia with a focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
“For me the 26th of January is both a sad day and a special day, as we remember and acknowledge our Elders past and present,” he said. “It's important to celebrate what's great about this country - many cultures coming together. I hope that my involvement this year can help spark some conversations and ideas on how we can improve Australia for future generations.”
Corey has also written a book – The First Scientists – and is donating a number of copies to Wellington High School.
Once the official ceremony concludes, residents are invited to enjoy a variety of family-friendly entertainment in the park from 10am.
This includes performances by Duncan Ferguson, Mick Austin and trio Tracey Charman, Deb Goninan and Petra Mellor, as well as some children’s games and entertainment.
Entry into the Dubbo, Wellington and Geurie Aquatic Leisure Centres will be free between 10am – 12pm.
