HELP DEVELOP A COMMUNITY SAFETY AND CRIME PREVENTION PLAN

Dubbo Regional Council will hold community consultation ahead of the development of a Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan.

DRC is committed to the wellbeing and safety of our community and Council want to assist the community to to understand Council’s role in this space.

“Council resolved to develop a Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan to highlight Council’s role and make a direct contribution to this issue,” Community Culture and Places Director Craig Arms said.

“We want this plan to reflect what our residents feel needs to be done to improve the perception of public safety when utilising public spaces around our city, towns and villages.

“We aren’t the police, and we aren’t the justice system so Council can’t apprehend, convict or address specific incidents of crime however there is a lot we can do in this space that will assist the lifestyle we have in the Dubbo Region.”

Through improved environmental design, Council for example can address issues identified by our community when utilising public spaces and also ensure that future urban and open space designs have public safety as a key priority. “Activated public spaces through clever design and event attraction and support are keys ways Council can make a contribution to actual and perceived experiences of safety by the community,” Mr Arms said.

As a community leader, Council can also play a role in bring different government and non-government service providers together to share information on service delivery, identify gaps and assist each other in a wholistic approach to this complex and society wide issue.

To continue the development of a plan Council has established a community consultation page on our YourSay website asking residents to provide feedback.

“We have a tool on which people can add a pin to a map to highlight a public space where they feel unsafe. Once that pin is on the map you will then be able to tell us why that space makes you feel unsafe,” Mr Arms said.

“We are also asking residents what they think Council’s role in community safety is and what they believe a safe community looks like, so we can tailor the plan and come up with actions that lead to positive outcomes.”

Community consultation on the plan has started and will run through until 25 June.

Should you wish to talk to a staff member in person about the Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan staff will be available at:
