VOTING OPEN FOR SHARED PATHWAY OFFICIAL NAME
Voting has now opened as Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) continues the search for an official name for the updated section of the Tracker Riley Shared Pathway along the Macquarie River in Dubbo.
The community were encouraged to suggest names for the new section with 20 received by Council.
Of those 20, seven have been shortlisted for community to choose their preferred name before a report is taken back to Council in August.
The seven names shortlisted all meet the guidelines outlined by the Geographical Naming Board (GNB).
The shortlisted names and their meanings are:
- Bird Song Path – named for the numerous birds seen along the path,
- Girragirra Mawang – Happy all together,
- Tracker Riley – Continuation of the name of the whole pathway, reflecting a respected community member and pioneering Aboriginal Police Officer,
- Yiramal – Bank of the River,
- Biladurang wagirra – Platypus Walk,
- Dyirigang – Magpie to honour the rich birdlife along the Macquarie River,
- Yindyamarra – Respect, be gentle and polite.
Once voting closes the preferred name will be taken back to the Council meeting in August for endorsement before it is sent to the Geographical Naming Board for final approval.
The shortlisted Wiradjuri names have been validated using the Australian Government’s Wiradjuri Language Program, however if the preferred name chosen holds significance for our local Aboriginal communities, further engagement will be undertaken before it is submitted to the Geographical Naming Board.
Residents can vote on their preferred name here.
Voting closes 9am Monday 29 July 2024.
