WEAVING WORKSHOPS AT YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY
Parkes-based Wiradjuri environmental artist Ronda Sharpe will be sharing her knowledge and skills during weaving workshops at the Macquarie Regional Library Dubbo and Wellington branches in June.
Participants in the workshops will be taught traditional and contemporary weaving techniques using a variety of natural fibres and reclaimed materials.
Ronda is drawn to creating fibre artworks that represent a continuum of Wiradjuri cultural artefacts, country, language and Yindamarra (respect) for Mother Earth.
She uses recycled data cables, electrical cables and natural grasses, transforming these mediums into sculptural forms that contrast modern and traditional weaving techniques.
“This is a great opportunity to work with a local artist to try something new or maybe channel your creativity into a woven masterpiece,” Macquarie Regional Library Manager, Kathryn McAlister said.
“The weaving workshops are free for the community to attend and are a great opportunity to bring a friend along for a social outing and learn how to weave at the same time.”
The Dubbo Library will host sessions on Friday 14 June at 3:30pm – 5:30pm for ages 13 – 18.
The Wellington Library will host a session on Saturday 15 June from 10am – 12pm for ages 13+.
“The Macquarie Regional Library hosts a large number of events throughout the year that provide different offerings to the community,” Ms McAlister said.
“Just last month we had international best-selling author Chris Hammer at our library branches and this month we are working with a local artist to provide a really different experience.”
“We pride ourselves on having a diverse range of events and activities that appeal to different members of the community.”
The weaving workshops at the Macquarie Regional Library are free to attend but bookings are required. To book, visit www.mrl.nsw.gov.au or contact 02 6801 4510 for the Dubbo event or 02 6840 1780 for the Wellington event.
