WATER RESTRICTIONS LIFTED ACROSS THE DUBBO REGION
Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) resolved to lift the level one water restrictions effective immediately, following the May Ordinary Council meeting.
In response to the worst drought on record, DRC implemented water restrictions on 1 June 2019. As drought conditions worsened, Council then implemented level 3 water restrictions on 1 October 2019, followed by level 4 on 1 November 2019. In July 2020, due to the inflow received into Burrendong Dam, Council eased water restrictions to level one.
Director of Infrastructure, Julian Geddes thanked the community for their co-operation throughout a tough time for the region. “The Dubbo region was one of the hardest hit by the drought in many ways. It was a scary time for our community. We are extremely proud of how the community responded to the water restrictions and we thank everyone for their ongoing understanding,” said Mr Geddes.
The water restrictions have been lifted immediately.
“While the water restrictions may have eased, DRC is still urging residents to be wise with our water. We have learnt that water is a precious resource and without it can be devastating for our region and for communities downstream, so we are asking the everyone to be mindful when they turn on the tap,” said Mr Geddes.
“The new smart water meter technology that is currently being fitted to properties connected to town water supply allows residents and businesses to monitor their water usage via an online platform. Although the water restrictions have been lifted, DRC is still encouraging people to be responsible when using water around the home or office. Ideally it would be great to see residents follow a guide of approximately 380 - 400 litres per person per day,” said Mr Geddes.
Manager of Water and Sewage Supply, Stephen Carter made the recommendation to lift the restriction citing Burrendong Dam levels have increased from 24.45% in July 2020 to the current level of 57% following significant rain events in March 2021. The Macquarie Regulated River Drought Stage has now reduced from Level 3 to normal operation, meaning there are no restrictions in allocations.
